The mission of Parallax Concerts is to create cohesively-themed performances of historical and modern works and set them in living and local arts spaces. In doing so, Parallax Concerts marries music from distant points in time, showcasing breadth of artistic diversity and interconnectivity within old and new musical traditions. Parallax Concerts answers to topics of relevance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and diversity within the existing classical music landscape, hoping to create thought-provoking musical experiences that empower the voices of living artists and illuminate the remarkable history behind their art.
In July 2024, cellist Hasan Abualhaj and keyboardist Yunyi Ji founded and launched Parallax Concerts with the support of The Juilliard School’s Marks Center Project Grant. Abualhaj and Ji act as co directors of the series, assuming performance and administrative roles and working closely with musicians of the SF-based contemporary ensemble Stolen Time. Parallax Concerts’s launch concert took place at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society on July 27, 2024 and attracted over 120 people in attendance, featuring a program containing J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 on historical instruments alongside the premiere and commission of a new work “Gauze and Particulate” by Taylor Joshua Rankin.
