Musical Entrepreneurship with Matthew Linaman

How can you take your original project idea and bring it to fruition? How do we balance our artistic visions with the demands of the “real world”? How can you grow what you’ve started and increase your reach? What avenues can you explore to develop new audiences and raise brand awareness?

With these questions and more swirling around every new musical project, musicians and ensembles must balance the scope of their ambitions with ambiguities around project income, marketing costs, recording and video costs, ever-shifting timelines, and fundraising pathways. This workshop will begin with Matthew sharing his approach to unique challenges and opportunities within his own work, followed by interactive discussions on select participant’s projects.

We’ll discuss project development and execution through the lens of creative musical entrepreneurship and unpack some of the things that hold us back, how we can balance our audiences desires with our own authenticity, and how building relationships is one of the best things we can do for our career. Attendees will walk away with concrete suggestions for how to build and execute meaningful musical projects.

Matthew Linaman has performed in over 15 countries both as a soloist, teacher and as a founding member of the Cello Street Quartet. Matthew has spoken on the TED stage and served as a Music Ambassador for the U.S. State Department in Europe and Asia.
