Through commissions, curation, and educational outreach, Friction continues to expand the canon of string quartet performance and engagement for listeners and students alike. The quartet is widely celebrated by audiences throughout the world, achieving international acclaim. In 2016, Friction made their debut at Carnegie Hall and returned in 2018 to perform George Crumb’s Black Angels. Their performance was described as, “one of the truest and most moving things I’ve ever heard or seen.” (ZEALnyc) After winning Second Prize in the 2016 Schoenfeld Competition, Friction has gone on to hold residences at the New Music for Strings Festival in Denmark, Interlochen Arts Camp, and the Lunenburg Academy of Music in Nova Scotia. The quartet appears on recordings with National Sawdust Tracks, Innova Records, Albany Records, Pinna Records, and many independent releases, alongside two, self-released full-length albums. They received an InterMusic SF Musical Grant Program award in 2019, and in 2022, were awarded a grant by Chamber Music America for a commission by Paul Mortilla. Friction Quartet joined the InterMusic SF Fiscal Sponsorship Program Affiliate Artist roster in 2012. In 2020, they formed Friction Performing Arts, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Many artists, like Friction Quartet, start their careers in need of vital professional development support and through the Fiscal Sponsorship Program, receive the services needed to chart their path to career-maturity.We're delighted to present Friction Quartet for our guests on June 3!
